The Order of the Golden Dawn
The Order of the Golden Dawn is the name given to the seven most powerful and most prominent figures within the magical and arcane realms of Earth. They are the primary defense against the powerful magical and extradimensional forces that would seek to invade, corrupt, or destroy our reality. Originally they were a group founded and controlled by the British Empire at the beginning of the 20th Century, but following the betrayal of Doctor Crypt, they collapsed. While all of them were incredibly powerful by themselves and together, what truly made them a force to be reckoned with was their number of seven members. This special number granted them a special kind of arcane empowerment that allowed the group to confront forces otherwise beyond even their ability to battle. So long as they remained seven, they were unstoppable. But when they were betrayed, they lost that special power, and so they were torn apart by their enemies.
However, under the guidance of Aeon, a new order was gathered together, just in time to stop the incursion of the Tarnish into our universe. Since then, they have helped repulse many threats, from the enigmatic Watchers to the efforts of the traitor Doctor Crypt and his Seven Sinners to bring the Nephilim back into our dimension.
Members:
Aeon- Currently recognized as the premiere sorcerer in our dimension both within and without, Aeon is easily one of the most powerful heroes alive. An Irishman who was drafted to serve in World War I, he was the only survivor
of an attack by a German occultist, an event which sent him on the road to becoming a sorcerer. Later he discovered that his closest friend was in fact a powerful sorcerer, but due to a conspiracy was on his death bed. He bequeathed Aeon with all of his remaining power, knowledge, and collection of arcane artifacts and lore, allowing him to find and defeat the conspiracy responsible for his friend's death. He was a member of the first Order, and was there to witness their betrayal by Doctor Crypt.
Madame Blavatsky- Aeon's wife and faithful companion, Madame Blavatsky is a Russian sorceress of considerable skill herself. What sets her apart is her gender and what it represents. She is celibate, and so her virginity gives her
a power that makes her a valuable addition to the team.
Peter Carnacki- The great-grandson of the legendary "Ghost Finder," Peter Carnacki has inherited his great-grandfather's array of supernatural technologies, and like his ancestor has used them to become a noted paranormal detective and demon fighter. His grandfather was a member of the first Golden Dawn, and was one of the victims of Doctor Crypt's betrayal.
Longinus- In fact the man who stabbed Jesus Christ on the cross, Casca Longinus has been cursed to wander the Earth until the second coming. He cannot die, and as such is possessed of a regenerative ability so remarkable that there are few ways to significantly harm him. He possesses and wields the Spear of Destiny, blessed by the magical power of the man it was used to stab. With it Longinus becomes the team's powerhouse, a powerful divinely strengthened warrior with nearly two thousand years of experience as a soldier and mercenary.
Tenebrous, the Nightstalker- Once an ordinary citizen in Louisiana, he was senselessly killed by criminals, his body dumped into a swamp. But the bayou was cursed, and his rage and thirst for vengeance took the innate energies in the swamp to give him form. Now empowered, he seeks to bring vengeance to all evil-doers, an undead swampland punisher, who can change his form and summon the very swamp and its life to assist him.
Jane Hellmont- Jane was a former college student who went with her friends on spring break to an abandoned house. But the house was haunted by evil spirits who systematically killed, tortured, and raped the group. Only Jane survived through sheer guts, will, and the ability to wield a chainsaw. Ever since that night she devoted herself to learning everything about magic and the occult that she could. Unlike the other sorcerers on the team Jane is a combat magician, using her knowledge and skills in a strictly more offensive form that often revolves around wielding a shotgun containing special ammo, or in general a variety of magical effects designed to take her training by a retired mercenary and turn it into a powerful form of supernatural warfare.
Daniel Delphian- The only member truly lacking in any form of offensive magical ability or equipment, Daniel Delphian makes up with it through sheer luck and Machiavellian talent. Descended from a line of ancient magicians he has magic running through his blood, but prefers to stick to good ole planning and manipulation, and when that doesn't work out, barroom fisticuffs. That said, he has some moderate psychic talents, even if he doesn't care to use them in a significant manner.
Enemies:
The Tarnish- A powerful, mindless corrupting force that dwells within the cracks of reality. Often called on by evil sorcerers and cults as a source of power, heedless of the fact that all the Tarnish does is corrupt and
consume until there is nothing left. However, there have been rumors that there is in fact a guiding intellect lurking at the heart of the Tarnish, but so far no evidence has been revealed of what that might be. Those empowered
or corrupted by the Tarnish often call themselves the Tarnished Ones.
Doctor Crypt- Once a member of the original Order, Doctor Crypt revealed that he had a far more twisted and dark side to him than anticipated. After serving faithfully during World War II, he betrayed the Golden Dawn, tempted by the offers of the Nephilim. He was seemingly destroyed in the final battle of the original Order, but in actuality was merely consumed by the forces he tried to control. He is back, this time as a shapeless, monstrous spirit entity that must possess bodies in order to function properly and use most of his magic. But once in possession of a body he becomes a force to be reckoned with, one of the most powerful supervillains known and capable of taking on entire teams of superheroes, even the current Order and the original core group of the Guardians.
The Rough Beast- A powerful eldritch abomination located somewhere in Egypt, who will one day rise up to destroy the Earth. Often activities to stop the Beast involve preventing the circumstances that will cause it to rise in the first place, as its awakening is a universal truth that will eventually happen.
Nephilim- Fallen angels and their half-human offspring. Their bodies were destroyed during the great flood, and their spirits cast into a bottomless pit. They were able to coerce the corrupt and dark hearted Doctor Crypt into betraying the original Golden Dawn and cause their downfall. Doctor Crypt's current bodiless yet monstrous state is a result of being exposed and intermingled with them.
The Seven Sinners- Doctor Crypt's core group of followers, cultists, madmen, and monsters empowered by him by being imbued with the essence of one of the Seven Sins. A powerful group of counterparts to the Order.
The Watchers- Enigmatic supernatural entities, possibly angels, who answer to a malevolent "higher authority." Their goal is to eliminate the Order and similar groups and individuals, though why is unknown. They are amoral entities, never distinguishing between concepts of good or evil, and will treat individuals like Aeon the same as they would Doctor Crypt. Immensely powerful, it takes extraordinary measures just to imprison one.
