The Living Dead are a band of of ghoulish individuals who prowl the midwest and southeastern sections of the United States, keeping to smaller towns in their unending journey of feeding themselves and their army of zombie minions. Founded by the immortal necromancer Mortis Rex, they prey on any and all who cross their paths, even if they delay in taking the victim.
Necro Girl of the Young Guardians was a former member of this group.
Mortis Rex- Founder of the Living Dead. Purportedly was a part of the first English settlements in America, seemingly killed on several occasions by settlers who discovered his ghoulish activities. But every time he has come back, taking on a new identity and resuming his work every time. No matter what happens, he always seems to have access to a significant amount of gold, old gold from a time long before the most ancient of human civilizations. He actually fears Necro-Girl, as her telepathic ability to communicate and resurrect the dead could potentially overshadow his own vast power and put an end to whatever scheme he is ultimately getting at.
Tombstone- A mob hitman betrayed and buried alive by his own gang, his resentment even in death was enough to attract the attention of Mortis Rex. But rather than revive him as any ordinary zombie, Mortis used his arcane magic to resurrect him as a giant of stone and earth, a living graveyard over eight feet in height. A spell makes him look like a flesh and blood human, if a bit pale skinned, but anyone with the power to penetrate his super-tough hide will find he is anything but flesh and blood. This makes him extremely difficult to put down, as even being completely destroyed is a mere inconvenience, Tombstone rebuilding himself from stone and soil.
Bodybag- An oily, slimy creature that Mortis Rex summoned at some point and bent to his will, the creature nicknamed "Bodybag" is a demonic parasite. It can encase corpses and animate them into bodies, or possess a living human, slowly draining the victim of all life until they are nothing more than a living dead. Like the other members of the group it is extremely hard to put down, and if its host body is destroyed it will hop into a new one.
Mortuna- Mortis Rex's mistress, a woman who shares and delights in the dark magics he practises. She is particularly hateful toward Necro-Girl for betraying the group, and desires to take the girl and imprison her soul, adding her to Mortuna's collection of imprisoned spirits, to be tortured and used at her leisure. Mortuna's specialty is the manipulation, control, and summoning of spirits and aetheral forces to assist her, as well as shadows and blood.
Bonehead- Another of the group's "muscle," Bonehead is little more than a living skeleton, another experiment of Mortis Rex's whim. But the magics that created this creature made its bones nigh indestructible. This same magic makes it superhuman strong and agile, leaping about at rapid speed before lashing out with claws capable of slicing through steel. And being a living skeleton, it is already hard to hit to begin with.
Abattoir- A pyromaniac who burned himself to death in a botched attempt at an arson. Mortis Rex revived him to become yet another lieutenant in his army of the living dead, endowing him with powers that suited his nature. Beneath the hood and cloak he wears is a body made of burning fire, smoke, and brimstone. If he isn't flying about scorching you with fires straight from Hell itself, he is blinding you with suffocating smoke filled with sulfur.
Besides these members, the Living Dead are often accompanied by a small army of hundreds of zombies, fast, durable, and acid-spitting creatures.
