Name: The Guardians
Purpose: Protection of humanity, bringing all evildoers to justice, and maintaining international peace.
Reputation: Highly regarded by most who have heard of them, especially in the West. Many of the individual members are considered national heroes in their home countries.
Headquarters:
History: The Guardians are the latest association of superheroes from across the world. They are notable in that they are the first major superhero team with a strong international membership and focus, compared to the more Anglo-European centric teams that preceded it.
They were founded in 1999, on the eve of the new millennium, when nine superheroes joined forces to battle an invasion by the Millennial, an entity from beyond time. Following this event, the heroes maintained a loose association until they finally decided to go public and become an official superhero team.
They gained great fame and notoriety for their adventures after that, until 2007, when aliens invaded the earth. This was the greatest, hardest fought battle for the Guardians. Even with the help of all of Earth's heroes and villains it was a narrow victory. Millions of lives were lost, including the entirety of the island of Hawaii. But in the end, the Guardians and their allies prevailed.
Since then, Earth and the Guardians have slowly recovered. In the wake of the invasion the Guardians helped found the Guardians International Superhero Academy in 2009, creating an artificial island where Hawaii was as a monument to the lives lost. They have also considered the possibility of creating an international community of superheroes, something beyond the Guardians themselves. While such an organization is still in the planning stages, they hope to organize the superhero community into a force capable of stopping any crime and disaster anywhere.
Members: Originally consisting of nine members, the Guardians have expended to eighteen in the years since. They are considering adding an additional two members from the heroes who assisted them during the invasion, but there is little consensus about who should be added.
1. The Enforcer- Legendary supersoldier, former member of an ill-fated special ops team, notable for his one man war on organized crime and international terrorism from the city of Ashenburg. He has single-handily taken down ancient political conspiracies, dictatorships, crime syndicates, saved the president from assassination and kidnapping, and prevented annihilation by nuclear and biological weapons.
2. Thunderhead- A famous superhero, Thunderhead has risen up as a heroic icon, demonstrating that no matter how powerful a super is, they are not to be feared. His optimistic and positive outlook underscores his crusade against those who would destroy supers and those who would annihilate humans to pave way for post-human civilization. He is most famous for repeatedly stopping the schemes of super-supremacist Typhon and his association of superhuman terrorists, who at one point was Thunderhead's mentor.
3. Uproar- A decorated Marine, Uproar left his impoverished family to look for his place in the world, only to return and discover a neighborhood overrun with crime and violence. To protect his family he has gone on a one-man crusade to clean the streets and end the vicious cycle of bloodshed and poverty in the place he calls home. This has brought him into direct conflict with some shady and powerful individuals as he climbs the ladder of power that perpetuates this society. Uproar has been joined in his crusade by Blade Runner, and the two heroes are an item.
4. Blade Runner- Once an ordinary woman, she became the victim of an artificially engineered, semi-sapient biological device that bonded itself to her, wrapping her in a living sheath that grants her superhuman speed and the ability to generate bladed weaponry from her body. Hunted by the mysterious creators of the device, she fought crime and her pursuers until meeting Uproar. The two heroes have worked to turn the tables on Blade Runner's hunters, and discover just who is responsible for the proliferation of biological weapons and super-soldiers in the world and on the streets. She and Uproar have developed a romantic relationship since.
5. Leviathan- A woman born of a horrific mutation caused by biological waste and mutagens infecting her parents, Leviathan has lived a life as an outcast, feared by humans for her appearance and incredible power. This ostracisation made her a mark for the villain Manticore, a freakish cyborg who led a group of mutants similar to himself and Leviathan. But even as she developed a romantic relationship with fellow mutant Superbeast, she questioned the vindictive and destructive nature of the groups' goals, and thanks to the Guardians she left behind her ways as a criminal monster, though not without separating her from the love of her life. As a later addition to the Guardians she has had to come to terms with how she perceives herself and is perceived.
6. Mizukaze- A national heroine of Japan, part of a duo along with Amaterasu. She hails from a powerful corporate family business that has long sought to exploit the family legend of an "ultimate warrior" to develop a revolutionary super-soldier to sell to the West, as a way to combat suspiciously similar demonic cyborgs being employed by an African dictatorship. They tried to manipulate her into summoning this "ultimate warrior," as they determined she was the key to it, but her stubborn independence led to her running away, taking two precious items with her. These items turned out to be two of the national treasures of Japan, and with them she can summon the power of this "ultimate warrior." Armed with the Kusanagi sword, she has power over the element of water, and the ability to summon portions of a powerful extradimensional being, culminating in her transformation into a skyscraper-sized entity.
7. Amaterasu- Mizukaze's partner is in fact a human avatar of the goddess she derives her name from. She has incarnated herself to help Mizukaze defeat the dark forces at work in the world from beyond time and space. Armed with the Yata no Kagami, one of the three pieces of the Imperial Regalia of Japan, she guides and mentors Mizukaze in their mutual crusade, though lately that relationship has taken a more romantic direction. Together, the two heroines are considered the national heroes of Japan, especially given their combined utilization of the Imperial Regalia as weapons.
8. Omega Man-
9. Lady Mesmerize-
10. Daybreak-

14. Vanguard- A gifted pilot in the USAF, sacrificed himself to help the gathering of superheroes defeat the Millenial. After his body was found he was brought back to life via a suit of armor that keeps him alive. After being restored was given the Medal of Honor, and as a premiere hero of the United States was christened "Vanguard." Vanguard remains in service with the Airforce as part of the United State's national superhero team, dividing his duties between his country and service as a founding member of the Guardians.
